rooms to love: creating the vintage feel

Today’s guest post is from Susi with Arcadian Lighting. I love the photos they chose for this post, and hope you enjoy these simple tips for adding a touch of mid-century vintage (and for different decorating tastes) to your rooms!

Vintage is not steadily defined by a single style, and in general means “a subset of old items”; which makes it work well with just about everything. Adding a few vintage objects or a single piece of vintage furniture can transform a space from “showroom” to “home”. Adding consignment lamps, antique accessories and classic fabrics are easy ways to give a room the feel that you’re sure to love.

Vintage Decor

Vintage styling is all about using unique objects, furniture, lighting and textiles from different design inspirations of past to create a lovely space that feels like you. Color can unite these new and flea market finds into a cohesive space, such as the light-hued room above.

A vintage quilt in a bold pattern sets the tone and personality for this crisp bedroom. Textile and wallpaper prints are a great way for adding vintage flare, like this neutral grey and white pattern from Rosie’s Vintage Wallpaper.

This charming kitchen has some wonderful yet slight vintage elements. Note the retro advertising poster and patterend thermos, along with the mustard yellow window valance and hanging pendant lights. We love the mounted elk bust above the door too, which helps this room excude a more modern atmosphere.

This entry is proof of the vintage-glam renaissance, as seen frequently in decor blogs such as The Decorista by Ashlina. White paint unifies a vintage mirror and chest of drawers, and makes them pop against boldly patterned orange and white wallpaper. The blue shade on the lamp provides a complementary color to the theme.

Another way to think of creating the aura of vintage design is to picture a room with comfortable charm. This cottage-esque living room is a mix of antique finds and newer pieces that work together through color, form and pattern.

Mixing the old and the new is a perfect way to give a room a distinct, nostalgic air. Incorporating family heirlooms or antiques into your design will give your home not only a vintage feel, but a personal touch.

guest post: suzanne from inspire to breathe

Hello, everyone! I’m Suzanne and I blog over at Inspire; To Breathe. I’m here today to talk about wearing vintage clothing – a sometimes daunting task if you’re not trying to look like you’ve stepped out of a photo of times gone by. I’ve chosen this white lace sheathe dress to illustrate how we can use accessories to define our style for a fresher take on vintage. It’s all about the accessories!

In this first look, I focused on fancy. The dress took on a formal tone when the accessories were full of glitter, right down to the shiny shoes. I kept my hair natural, the way I would normally wear it, because a full-on beehive would have almost turned this into a 60’s costume, which is just not believable for me.

I would wear this look to work or to any special occasion except a wedding. It is a white dress, after all.

The accessories for this look were a vintage gold coin purse, teal headband, pearl/teal bead bracelet (I wore it in my wedding!), sterling silver bow pin, and yellow gold smokey quartz ear studs from where I work. Yup, I like to mix gold & silver. Such a rebel.

For the second look I took it down a notch by pairing the dress with casual items, hoping for a 70’s-inspired vibe. I would wear this look to work (minus the hat), shopping, to dinner with friends, or to church.

The boots, hat, & bag are a big reason why the dress now looks more casual.

This time around, the look was accessorized by the straw hat, a sterling silver tourquoise ring, Sarah Coventry vintage necklace with dangly pendant, sterling silver feather earrings, and a vintage gold-filled wide bangle bracelet. The scale of the accessories was big, flowy, & chunky, which I think is an appealing contrast to the formality of the dress. Look two is definitely more approachable, and therefore my favorite.

Thanks for having me here, Kristina! I hope everyone had fun “wearing vintage” today!
